The Candler Foundry will launch multiple new Courses in the Community in January 2022, open to all who are passionate about theological education—or want to dive in for the first time. These in-depth courses, many taught by Candler faculty, address a range of topics related to faith, theology, and pressing issues in public life.
Courses range from 4 to 14 weeks and are offered in both online and in-person formats. No application is required. A list of courses beginning in January is below. “Women in the Hebrew Bible”
6 sessions | Mondays, January 10–February 14; 7:30–9:00 p.m. ET; online
Registration fee: $65.00
Taught by Gale A. Yee, Nancy W. King Professor Emerita of Biblical Studies at Episcopal Divinity School, this course will explore how the Bible is read by different people and will situate women in their historical and geographical settings to get a sense of the laws they labored under. “Howard Thurman: Spirituality and Community”

Taught by Walter Earl Fluker, Dean’s Professor of Spirituality, Ethics, and Leadership at Candler, this course will explore how spirituality influences concepts of community and assesses the practical implications of such concepts in the context of Howard Thurman’s writings and ministry. “Spirituality for the Contemporary World”

Taught by Kwok Pui Lan, Dean’s Professor of Systematic Theology at Candler, this course will explore different dimensions of a holistic and passionate spirituality for the modern world—including contributions from eco-conscious theologians, feminist religious writers, and Asian religions. The course will focus particularly on how to lead a discussion group on spirituality in churches, schools, and the workplace. Learn more and register.
“The Gospel of Luke: An Old and New Story”

Taught by The Candler Foundry’s postdoctoral fellow Elizabeth Arnold, this course will look at how Luke draws on the narrative of the Old Testament and uses it to shape the gospel story. Taught by Ryan Bonfiglio, assistant professor in the practice of Old Testament and director of The Candler Foundry, this course will draw on biblical scholarship and pastoral insights to provide strategies for reading and responding to the Old Testament in ways that are both faithful and constructive. “Prophetic Ministry and Imagination”
6 sessions | Wednesdays, January 19–February 23, 6:00–7:15 p.m. ET; in-person

Taught by Eric McDonnell, a doctoral student in Hebrew Bible in Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion, this course will take a close look at biblical figures Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Jesus, and how they embodied what Walter Brueggemann refers to as “the prophetic imagination.” The course will emphasize how the prophets can help us understand how God has acted in history, and how God is acting now. In addition to its upcoming courses, The Candler Foundry will be taking its TheoEd Talks program on the road to Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday, February 27 at 4:00 p.m. An ecumenical speaker series where leaders in the church and the academy share “the talk of their lives” in 20 minutes or less, TheoEd Talks aims to spark conversations that change the way people think about God, religion, and the power of faith to change lives. The presenter lineup in Charlotte will include Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ; Miroslav Volf, Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale University and founding director of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture; Yolanda Pierce, dean of Howard University School of Divinity; and Liz Clasen-Kelly, CEO of Roof Above, a comprehensive homeless services provider in Charlotte.
