Dual Degrees

Master of Arts in Bioethics and Master of Divinity/Master of Theological Studies

The MDiv/MA and MTS/MA in bioethics prepare students to work at the intersection of religion and health or health care—in bioethics, patient advocacy or pastoral care at a faith-based health care institution or organization. Offered in conjunction with Emory’s Laney Graduate School and the Center for Ethics, these dual degree opportunities allow students to complete both degrees in one less year than would be required to complete them separately: four years for the MDiv/MA and two years for the MTS/MA.

“I chose this program because it gave me the opportunity to explore my dual vocational interests. UGA’s MSW program has provided me with tools for providing advocacy, individual clinical support, and community development, while Candler has allowed me to see ministry beyond the church walls. I seek to use these tools to integrate greater mental health access within Black ministry spaces.”

“Combining theological education with business education has been an enriching experience that has fundamentally changed how I think about social impact and social enterprise. Whether leading a consulting project or a church, or reading sacred text or a financial statement, I have been able to utilize cross industry intelligence to think critically and creatively about global issues.”

“Candler’s opportunity for the dual degree is why I came here. The ability to integrate my study of theology with public health has been an invigorating experience. As the world’s problems become more complex, our approaches need to be interdisciplinary in response. Candler is a place to do that kind of study.”
