Foundry “Back in the Classroom” Series Geared Toward Alumni

With the start of the new school year, Candler’s public theological education initiative The Candler Foundry will launch “Back in the Classroom,” a new series of short online courses in collaboration with the school’s Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement.

Taught by Candler faculty and emeriti professors, each of the three courses will run for four weeks, combining rich academic content with practical insights for ministry. The first course, taught by Bandy Professor of Preaching and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Teresa Fry Brown, begins October 8.

The cost for each course is $50. Candler alumni can receive $15 off with the discount code CANDLER15 entered at checkout.

“The PreacHER and the Word”
Instructor: Teresa L. Fry Brown, Bandy Professor of Preaching and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

This course will cover women’s history, theology, and preaching. Participants will learn about women’s roles in ministry, challenges with authority and ordination, and gain practical sermon preparation tools—all while recognizing women who have shaped ministry.

“Black Theology and Faith”
Instructor: Noel L. Erskine, Professor Emeritus of Theology and Ethics
Dates: Tuesdays, February 3–24, 2026 | 6:30–7:45 p.m.

This course will explore how Black theology emerges from struggle, hope, and the pursuit of justice. Covering topics such as sin, reconciliation, baptism, and liberation, participants will examine how faith has been influenced by various historical contexts and its relevance across different cultures and communities today.
