James Abbington, who served as Associate Professor of Church Music and Worship from 2005 to 2025, died on September 27. A world-renowned musician and scholar, Dr. Abbington’s influence reached far beyond Candler, and his legacy will continue to do the same. Look for a tribute from one of his Candler colleagues on our website in the coming days. In the meantime, we offer this glimpse of how richly he blessed us.

Pitts Theology Library Head of Research and Instruction Brady Beard served as respondent for the presentation “The People’s Canon for Human Flourishing in the Age of AI,” held on September 9 at Emory’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion.

Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Christian Origins Luke Timothy Johnson reviewed Bruce Gordon’s new book The Bible: A Global History for Commonweal.

Bandy Professor Emeritus of Preaching Thomas G. Long’s article “Counterculture in the pulpit” was published in The Presbyterian Outlook.

Professor of Hebrew Bible and Doctor of Ministry Program Director Roger Nam will present at the hybrid conference “Biblical Theology in Asian America: Family, Migration, and Divine Presence” on October 7.

Associate Professor of Catholic Studies Susan Reynolds’s research was referenced in a Commonweal article about Catholic synodality.

Assistant Professor of Early Christianity and Anglican Studies Gabrielle Thomas recently published a series of articles on early Christian understandings of the devil:
