Faculty Closeup: Roger Nam

April 23, 2021

Roger S. Nam joined the Candler faculty in Hebrew Bible in fall of 2020. A second-generation Korean American, Nam earned his master of divinity at General Assembly Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea, where he performed an amazing feat: simultaneously learning Korean, Greek and Hebrew.

When asked to describe Candler, Nam says, “The Candler community has this really great intellectual rigor, but that’s just half of Candler. The other half of Candler is this moral call to really reshape the culture and the moral map of Christianity. There is a deep desire for community activism, there’s a deep commitment to justice.”

Get to know Roger Nam in this video, where he dives into his interest in economics, wealth and poverty in the biblical world; talks about his vocational shifts from the church to the financial world to academia; and, finally, expands on his role as a teacher and counselor to students, and what it means to him to join the Candler community.
