Academics at Candler

Candler combines rigorous academics, extensive fieldwork and intentional reflection like no other seminary so that you are prepared to make a real difference in the real world. Choose one of 16 degrees to match your academic interests and help fulfill your vocational goals.

At Candler you can take advantage of unique curriculum offerings while learning from some of the best minds in theological education. As a part of Emory University, you’ll have access to libraries, research facilities, and events and lectures in a community known for its outstanding scholars and experts.

Curriculum

Candler’s curriculum integrates the intellectual, personal, professional, and spiritual growth of students. A course of study includes biblical studies, theology, ethics and society, religion and culture. In the classroom you'll experience the study of religious and ministerial practices such as education, preaching, pastoral care, worship, and church administration, and then put your knowledge to the test in fieldwork placements in church, social service and clinical settings.

Vocational Discernment

Many students come to Candler with a strong sense of vocation and a desire to serve God and the church. They also come with questions about how they can use their gifts and interests to honor their commitments and fulfill their hopes. At Candler you’ll find a supportive environment and faculty and staff dedicated to helping you think critically about your call.

Faculty

Candler’s faculty is committed to both church and academy—to the preparation of ministers and other religious leaders, and to the education of outstanding academic scholars in religion. You’ll be swept up by their passion for teaching and challenged to reach beyond what is comfortable and convenient as you gain understanding of what it means to serve.
