Dr. Geordan Hammond joined the Candler faculty in the fall of 2024. Hammond comes to Candler from his posts as director of the Manchester Wesley Research Centre, senior lecturer in church history and Wesley studies, and director of research at Nazarene Theological College in Manchester, England.
He is an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Manchester and Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is a member of the Methodist-Roman Catholic International Commission sponsored by the World Methodist Council and the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity. Twice he has served as co-convenor of the Wesley Studies group of the Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies.
His areas of expertise include church history and theology with a focus on Britain and America in the early modern and modern periods, and the history and theology of the Methodist and Wesleyan traditions—particularly John and Charles Wesley and early proponents of Methodism; the Evangelical Revivals in their international context; and the Methodist, Wesleyan, Holiness, and wider Evangelical traditions up to the present day.
The author of the monograph John Wesley in America: Restoring Primitive Christianity (Oxford University Press, 2014), Hammond has also co-edited numerous volumes.
