Faculty Voices

Many of the world’s greatest minds in theological education are at Candler—in this school that makes room for teaching, scholarship and serving the church. Our students have the opportunity to hear, converse and interact with great scholars, great teachers and great advocates who comprise the faculty of Candler School of Theology.

“Passion…enthusiasm…awakening interests…the rigor of an idea…” These are the concepts our faculty articulate when asked why they teach. And there’s one more: They simply love teaching. Our instructors consider teaching their ministry and embrace the calling to lead students to their true calling.

As scholars, our faculty members are recognized around the world for their accomplishments. Many are Fulbright Scholars, have been awarded National Endowment for the Humanities and other prestigious fellowships, have received honorary doctorates or been honored by the American Academy of Religion.

They’re committed to the church, serving parishes, denominational bodies, and communities locally and around the world.

And they are passionate about engaging students—a standing ovation after a lecture is not unheard of.

They are real agents of change who drive real transformation in the church and society.

"I help student preachers find their unique voices. We talk through beliefs, we talk through theology, and we talk through background. Because God made us so different, there's room for everyone's own voice in the conversation."
-Teresa Fry Brown, Bandy Professor of Preaching
"Reading the Old Testament can be both inspiring and discouraging, an exercise in joy as well as a struggle in pain. Through tools such as historical contexts, language, and social scientific theories, I help students learn to skillfully interpret biblical texts for their own formation and the betterment of their own faith communities."
-Roger S. Nam, Professor of Hebrew Bible
