TheoEd Talks

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta · $15 general admission/free for students; registration required

Candler’s program in public theological education is partnering with First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta to present TheoEd Talks, an ecumenical speaker series where leaders in the church and the academy share “the talk of their lives” in 20 minutes or less, aimed at sparking conversations that affect the way people think about God, religion and the power of faith to change lives. The event will feature Episcopal priest and womanist biblical interpretation scholar Wil Gafney; Plywood People founder and “Love or Work” podcast hosts Jeff and André Shinabarger; Catholic priest and scholar-activist Bryan Massingale; and therapist and “The Liturgists” podcast co-host Hillary L. Roberto S. Goizueta, the 2019-2020 distinguished visiting professor in the Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on the Life and Teachings of Jesus and Their Impact on Culture, is the Margaret O’Brien Flatley Professor of Catholic Theology Emeritus at Boston College. Exhibition: “Thy Kingdom Come: American Evangelicalism from George Whitefield to Contemporary Politics”

Pitts Theology Library Exhibit Gallery • Free • Guided tours available

Pitts Theology Library’s spring exhibition pushes against monolithic portrayals of evangelicalism in the media and seeks to show the significance of this movement within the broader American culture. The exhibition is open during regular library hours. Annual Emory Sacred Harp Sing

The annual Emory Sacred Harp Sing features a cappella shape-note singing from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a potluck “Dinner on the Grounds” from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., and more singing from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Free and open to the public, with no prior experience necessary. Candler’s Black Student Caucus kicks off its annual Heritage Week with a Black Arts Gala showcasing art pieces that represent Mother Africa, as well as musical stylings and poetry presented by students and local Atlanta artists. Film Screening: “Foot Soldiers: Class of 1964”

As part of its annual Heritage Week, Candler’s Black Student Caucus will host a film screening of the documentary “Foot Soldiers: Class of 1964.” The film tells the story of the women of Spelman College’s Class of 1964 who, as college freshmen, participated in the largest coordinated series of civil rights protests in Atlanta’s history. A discussion and opportunity to organize in small groups will follow the screening. Register here. Candler’s Aquinas Center of Theology will celebrate the 25^th anniversary of spring 2020 McDonald Chair Roberto S. Goizueta’s seminal work Caminemos con Jesús and the release of Assistant Professor of Theology and Culture and Director of Catholic Studies Antonio Alonso’s new collection of Cuban liturgical music by the same name. The event will feature spoken reflections in English and Spanish and music by Alonso and others. Register here. Anna Julia Cooper Lecture: “Colored Orneriness as Critical Companion in U.S. Democracy”

Candler’s Black Church Studies program presents Emilie Townes, Dean and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt Divinity School. In her lecture, Townes will explore what she calls “colored orneriness” as a moral ideal that can provide a critical prophetic lens for black communities and churches in the U.S. that suffer and resist relentless systemic oppression. Guest speaker Rear Admiral Margaret Kibben (retired) served as the 26^th Chief of Chaplains of the U.S. Navy.
