Candler’s Faith and Finance program presents “Giving Freedom: A Right-Side-Up Approach to Church Fundraising.” Adam Hamilton, pastor of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, will give the keynote address on March 22 at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, seven guest speakers will present: Kerry Alys Robinson, founding executive director of Leadership Roundtable; Olu Brown, pastor of Impact Church in Atlanta; James Jordan, adjunct professor of church financial management at Candler; Mandy Sloan McDow, pastor of Los Angeles First United Methodist Church; Shannaan Dawda, financial coach, author, and founder of True Financial Coaches; Starsky D. Wilson, president and CEO of the Deaconess Foundation; and Audrey Hindes, pastor of Willow Avenue Mennonite Church in Clovis, California. Lecture: Elizabeth Johnson on “Is God’s Charity Broad Enough for Bears?”

Candler’s Catholic Studies program presents Sister Elizabeth A. Johnson, C.S.J., author and Distinguished Professor of Theology Emerita at Fordham University. In her lecture, Johnson will explore the human relationship to the natural world within the context of the dangerous ecological crisis our planet faces. Exhibition: “The Materiality of Devotion: From Manuscript to Print”

Pitts Theology Library’s spring exhibition provides visitors with the opportunity to explore a variety of objects, texts, and images that supported devotional practices in the medieval and early modern world. The exhibition is open during regular library hours. Aquinas Day Lecture: “To Lift Up the Lowly: An Aesthetic of the Common Good”

Annual Emory Sacred Harp Sing

The annual Emory Sacred Harp Sing features a cappella shape-note singing from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a potluck “Dinner on the Grounds” from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., and more singing from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Free and open to the public, with no prior experience necessary. Worship Service of Word and Table: Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass

Candler will conclude its celebration of Black History Month with a 40th-anniversary presentation of Gospel Mass by Robert Ray, the first setting of the Mass in black gospel style. The Gospel Mass will be sung and incorporated into the worship liturgy, performed by the Candler Singers, the Candler Chorale, Candler’s Voices of Imani, and a faculty/staff choir. Symposium: “The Materiality of Devotion: From Manuscript to Print”

In conjunction with its exhibition “The Materiality of Devotion: From Manuscript to Print,” Pitts Theology Library will host a one-day symposium based around the objects and themes of the exhibition. The event will include seven speakers from Emory and greater Atlanta representing the fields of conservation, art history, medieval and early modern history, and the history of all three Abrahamic religions. Lynley Herbert, associate curator of rare books and manuscripts at the Walters Art Museum, will give the keynote address on “Fragmentary Manuscripts.” Candler School of Theology is located on the campus of Emory University, at 1531 Dickey Drive, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Harold J. Berman Forum in Law and Religion Lecture: “Pursuing the Common Good: Constitutional Values, Human Diversity, and the Challenge of Pluralism”

Candler Singers Choir Tour

West End United Methodist Church, Brentwood United Methodist Church • Free

The Candler Singers will lead worship at two Nashville area churches on March 31, at West End United Methodist Church’s 8:45 a.m. service, and Brentwood United Methodist Church’s 11:05 a.m. service. All are welcome. The Singers, Candler’s premier musical ensemble comprised of students preparing for a variety of ministries in the church, the academy, and the world, present a concert of church music from around the globe, featuring classical, contemporary, folk, and spiritual genres. They are directed by David B. Daniel, director of chapel music and assistant professor in the practice of music ministry. Inaugural St. Catherine of Siena Lecture: “Reasons to Hope: Listening to the Wisdom of Earth”

The annual St. Catherine of Siena Lecture, which launches this year, is sponsored by Candler’s Aquinas Center of Theology and brings the voices of women theologians to the forefront. This year’s speaker is Sister Linda Gibler, OP, associate academic dean of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, and adjunct professor for the Loyola Institute for Ministry. Documentary Screening: “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story”

Candler’s Pitts Theology Library will host a screening of the documentary “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story.” Directed by Martin Doblmeier, the film features Candler faculty members Luther E. Smith Jr., professor emeritus of church and community, and Gregory C. Ellison II, associate professor of pastoral care and counseling. A panel discussion will follow the film.
