Pitts to Host Thurman Documentary Screening, Panel April 3

Candler’s Pitts Theology Library will host a screening of the new documentary “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story” on Wednesday, April 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Room 252 of Candler’s Rita Anne Rollins Building. A complimentary lunch will be provided for those who register in advance. Register here. A panel discussion will follow the screening.

Directed by Martin Doblmeier, the film features Candler faculty members Luther E. Smith Jr., professor emeritus of church and community, and Gregory C. Ellison II, associate professor of pastoral care and counseling. Walter Earl Fluker, Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Ethical Leadership at Boston University and the 2018-2019 distinguished visiting professor in the Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on the Life and Teachings of Jesus and Their Impact on Culture, and past holder of the McDonald Chair Barbara Brown Taylor were also among those interviewed, along with Georgia Congressman John Lewis and the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.

Doblmeier, Smith, Ellison, and Fluker will serve as panelists following the screening, along with Lerita Coleman Brown, Ayse I. Carden Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology at Agnes Scott College, who is also featured in the documentary.
