Spring Convocation to Launch New Semester
Candler will host an online Convocation on Tuesday, January 11 at 11:30 a.m. EST to celebrate the start of the spring 2022 semester. Candler Dean Jan Love will give opening remarks and Bishop William T. McAlilly 81T, bishop of the Nashville Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church, will deliver the convocation address, “What now shall we do?”, based on Luke 4:18-19.
The service will be live streamed on Facebook, YouTube, and on Candler’s website, and the address will be available on Vimeo after the live event.
A native of Mississippi, McAlilly earned his BA from Millsaps College and his MDiv from Candler. He was ordained a deacon in The United Methodist Church in 1979 and ordained an elder in 1982. In 2017, McAlilly received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
McAlilly has served in a wide variety of ministry settings in Georgia and Mississippi, and has been a delegate to four Jurisdictional Conferences and three General Conferences of The United Methodist Church. He was elected to the episcopacy in 2012 and served as president of the Southeastern Jurisdiction College of Bishops in 2016-17. He holds multiple leadership positions, including serving as a member of the Emory University Board of Trustees.
