Carrie NewcomerGrammy-winning songwriter, poet, performer and educator Carrie Newcomer will be the distinguished guest speaker for the 2018 Annual Women’s Forum sponsored by Candler’s Women, Theology, and Ministry program. Newcomer will speak and perform with pianist Gary Walters on November 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Cannon Chapel sanctuary. The event is free and open to the public, with registration required. A vocalist and guitarist, Newcomer has released 16 solo albums, including The Beautiful Not Yet, A Permeable Life, and Everything is Everywhere. She is also the author of two companion books of poetry and essays, A Permeable Life: Poems and Essays (Available Light Publishing, 2014) and The Beautiful Not Yet: Poems, Essays and Lyrics (Available Light, 2016). Newcomer’s first theatrical production, Betty’s Diner: The Musical, was produced as part of Purdue University’s 2015-16 theatrical season. She has appeared on PBS’s Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly and On Being with Krista Tippett, and is a frequent collaborator with author and speaker Parker J. Palmer.

Newcomer holds an honorary degree in Music for Social Change from Goshen College. She tours internationally, including to Africa and the Middle East, where she has performed in schools, spiritual communities, and AIDS hospitals. She has also served as a cultural ambassador to India.
