
Honors for Candler Faculty, Staff

As the 2016-2017 academic year comes to a close, multiple Candler faculty and staff members have received noteworthy honors.
- Jennifer R. Ayres, associate professor of religious education and director of Candler’s religious education program, has been selected by Emory University’s Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry to be the Center’s Presidential Fellow next year during her sabbatical.
- At Candler’s March 30 Honors Day celebration, Sarah Bogue, reference and instruction librarian at Pitts Theology Library, received the award for Staff Person of the Year, selected by students. One nominator praised Bogue for being “supportive and friendly to all students, and constantly seeking ways to better serve the student body.”
- Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Mary Lou Greenwood Boice was honored for her 25th anniversary of service to Emory at a gala luncheon on April 10 for all Emory staff employees who met or exceeded this milestone.
Anthony A. Briggman has been promoted to Associate Professor of the History of Early Christianity.
- Anne Burkholder, associate dean of Methodist studies and professor in the practice of ecclesiology and church leadership, has been appointed to The United Methodist Church Ministry Study Commission for 2017-2020.
- At Candler’s May 8 diploma ceremony, Dean Jan Love presented Elizabeth Corrie, director of the Youth Theological Initiative and associate professor in the practice of youth education and peacebuilding, with the Exemplary Teacher Award, sponsored by the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. This award recognizes outstanding faculty members for their contributions to the learning arts and to the institution.
- At Candler’s March 30 Honors Day celebration, Gregory C. Ellison II, associate professor of pastoral care and counseling, received the award for Faculty Person of the Year, selected by Candler students. One student nominator shared that Ellison has “made space for my colleagues and me to better tune ourselves as servants and scholars. Further, he has given himself selflessly as a supporter of the aims and goals of his students.”
- At Candler’s May 8 diploma ceremony, Dean Love awarded Bandy Professor of Preaching Teresa L. Fry Brown the Emory Williams Teaching Award, the highest teaching award granted by Emory University, which honors faculty for fostering participation, inquiry, and creative expression in the classroom, providing a model for teaching and scholarship, and serving as a mentor to students.
- Associate Professor of Old Testament Joel M. LeMon received a $50,000 grant from the Wabash Center for his doctoral program grant proposal, “Transforming Pedagogy for Religion and Theology through Online Teaching,” which will train PhD students in digital pedagogy, particularly in conjunction with Candler’s Doctor of Ministry degree program.
- The papers from Candler’s fall 2016 conference, “Unfinished Worlds: Jürgen Moltmann at 90,” organized by Associate Professor of Systematic Theology Steffen Lösel, have been published in the April edition of Theology Today.
- At Candler’s March 30 Honors Day celebration, Lösel received the On Eagle’s Wings Excellence in Teaching Award, conferred by the senior class in recognition of faithful and dedicated service. One student nominator wrote that Lösel is “one of the most truly pastoral professors we have at Candler. This has been such a gift as he continually demonstrates genuine care for students’ wellbeing.”
- Mathew A. Pinson has been promoted to Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations.
- Assistant Professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies Kevin M. Watson has been awarded a grant for his pre-tenure leave next year.
- At Candler’s March 30 Honors Day celebration, Watson received the On Eagle’s Wings Excellence in Teaching Award, conferred by the senior class in recognition of faithful and dedicated service. One nominator praised Watson for his lectures: “brilliant, both theological and pastoral, historically grounded and yet full of relevance for the contemporary ecclesial context.”
- Professor of New Testament Walter T. Wilson has been selected by the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry to be the Center’s Senior Theology Fellow next year during his sabbatical.
