Hylen, Scheib Make Christian Century Books Issue
Two books by Candler faculty members have been selected as recommended reading in the fall books issue of the Christian Century. Associate Professor of New Testament Susan E. Hylen and Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Pastoral Theology Karen D. Scheib each have their latest books included in a segment featuring volumes chosen by fellow scholars as the best recently published books in the fields of New Testament, global Christianity, American religious history, and practical theology.
In the New Testament category, Hylen’s A Modest Apostle: Thecla and the History of Women in the Early Church (Oxford, 2015) earned kudos from Matthew L. Skinner of Luther Seminary for describing “a complex landscape in which Christian women exercised authority while conforming to conventions that prized modesty.”
Scheib’s Pastoral Care: Telling the Stories of Our Lives (Abingdon, 2016) garnered praise from Yale Divinity School’s Mary Clark Moschella in the category of practical theology: “Clear and accessible prose as well as helpful exercises and discussion starters make this a fine teaching text.”
