The society, officially known as Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, has approximately 1,000 members from more than 30 countries. It began in the late 1930s as a joint effort by Continental and British New Testament scholars to form a professional society dedicated to furthering New Testament studies. The society produces the quarterly journal New Testament Studies and the Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series (Cambridge University Press), both comprising specialized research regarding all aspects of New Testament textual and historical study.
