Whitmore, Lowrey to Lead Episcopal Studies
Dean Jan Love has announced that the Rt. Rev. Keith Whitmore and the Rev. Canon Lang Lowrey will lead Candler’s Episcopal Studies Program in the upcoming academic year. Both serve in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Whitmore as assistant bishop and Lowrey as the canon for Christian enterprise.
Whitmore is well known and respected in the Candler community, having served since 2008 in various roles in Episcopal studies, including tenures as part-time director and, before that, as an adjunct faculty member. He will return to the Candler faculty in a part-time capacity as distinguished visiting professor of Episcopal studies, where he will teach and assist in student recruitment. He served as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Eau Claire in Wisconsin from 1999-2008 before coming to Atlanta.
Lowrey will join the Candler faculty in a part-time capacity as professor in the practice of church leadership. In addition to teaching courses, he will arrange and supervise contextual education for Episcopal students and recruit those who teach courses required for Episcopal students.
A Candler alumnus and an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Lowrey has served at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta and was founding rector at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church and Day School in Vinings, a successful church plant that now has 1,000 people in its community. From 2010 to 2013, he was president of The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City, where he led the institution through a period of broad-based restructuring and the development of new revenue streams. He also has enjoyed a highly successful career as a corporate executive, and is involved in many missions and outreach organizations.
