The Candler Singers, the elite choir from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, have been selected to lead worship at Washington National Cathedral on Friday, October 10 at 5:30 p.m. The performance will be the highlight of a special tour for the Candler Singers in the Washington, D.C. area in celebration of Candler’s centennial.

“It is an exciting and rare opportunity for the Candler Singers to have been chosen to lead worship at the National Cathedral,” says Rev. Barbara Day Miller, associate dean of worship and music at Candler, who directs the choir. “This appearance will mark the first time in Candler’s 100-year history that one of its choirs will sing at this historic house of prayer in the nation’s capital.”

The Candler Singers also will participate in services at Wesley Theological Seminary and Foundry United Methodist Church in Dupont Circle, and will perform concerts at Mt. Olivet UMC in Arlington, Virginia, and for the United Methodist Board of Church and Society in the District.

“This gives alumni serving the Baltimore-Washington and Virginia conferences of The United Methodist Church an opportunity to attend a number of other worship services and performances featuring the choir over Columbus Day weekend,” says Day Miller.

The musicians who make up the Candler Singers are all seminary students at Candler who are preparing for ministry in the church, the academy, and the world. They come from a variety of Christian denominations and from across the United States, as well as from South Korea and Canada.

In addition to leading weekly worship at Candler, the choir performs at a wide range of churches, regional events, and denominational gatherings across the Southeast. They have been a featured choir in worship and in concerts during the quadrennial General Conferences of The United Methodist Church in 2004, 2008, and 2012.

The Candler Singers are also scheduled to lead a service of Choral Evensong at the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta on November 16.
