Final Dean's Lecture to Address Latin American Immigration

Scholar-activist Miguel A. De La Torre, professor of social ethics and Latino/a studies at Illif School of Theology, will present the final Dean’s Lecture of the semester, “Why They Come: Understanding Causes of Latin American Immigration,” Wednesday, April 16, at 11:00 a.m. in room 252 of Candler’s Rita Anne Rollins Building. Drawing from themes set forth in his book Doing Ethics from the Margins (Orbis Books, 2004), De La Torre will look beyond everyday rhetoric to discern the causes behind immigration and to explore ethical responses to these causes.

De La Torre’s academic work focuses on social and political ethics within contemporary U.S. thought, specifically how religion affects race, class and gender oppression. He specializes in approaching marginalized systems within the United States through a postmodern lens in order to challenge structures of oppression.
