Ashes to GoOn February 13, 2013 – Ash Wednesday – teams of Candler's Episcopal Studies students fanned out across Emory University’s campus to offer “Ashes to Go.” Their efforts were highlighted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s slideshow of Ash Wednesday observances from around the world.

“Ashes to Go” is a new nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people visiting transit stops, street corners, coffee shops, and college campuses to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by with ashes. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the holy season of Lent, a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

The Rt. Rev. Keith B. Whitmore, Assistant Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta and director of Candler’s Episcopal Studies Program, decided to have Candler students seeking ordination participate in this event to give them experience in non-traditional services.
