Bishop StokesUnited Methodist Bishop Mack B. Stokes, who taught for 31 years at Candler before his election to the episcopacy in 1972, died Nov. 21 at the age of 100. From 1972 to 1980, he was bishop of the Jackson (Miss.) Episcopal Area, where he successfully merged African-American and white annual conferences into two integrated conferences. In 2008, Stokes and his wife established an endowment for a chaired professorship at Candler.

"I very much enjoyed my relationship with Mack and his family since my arrival at Candler in 2007," wrote Candler Dean Jan Love in an email to the Candler community. "Mack loved Candler and Emory very much and attended meetings of the Emory Board of Trustees as an emeritus member as frequently as he could," she wrote. "The last time he was on campus was in November 2011, when we took the opportunity at a Committee of 100 meeting to celebrate his 100th birthday a few weeks early."
