Carol NewsomCarol Newsom, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Old Testament at Candler, has been appointed director of Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion (GDR). She will serve a two-year term, beginning in fall 2012.

Bobbi Patterson, professor of pedagogy in Emory’s Department of Religion, will serve as associate director for the same two-year term.

Newsom and Patterson succeed Carl Holladay, Charles Howard Candler Professor of New Testament Studies at Candler, and Gary Laderman, professor in Emory’s Department of Religion, who served as co-directors of the GDR for the previous two years.  

The GDR is a unit of the Laney Graduate School and draws on the resources of the Department of Religion in Emory College and Candler School of Theology. It is the second-largest doctoral program at Emory and benefits from one of the most diverse faculties and student bodies in American doctoral education. At present, the GDR is the home of some 60 faculty teaching across 9 Courses of Study and approximately 150 students on campus pursuing the doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree.
