Candler School of Theology Introduces Certificate in Music and Worship

NOTE: The Certificate in Music and Worship program will not be offered in 2012.

Candler School of Theology at Emory University is offering a new Certificate in Music and Worship, providing worship and music leaders the opportunity to study closely with the esteemed theologians and musicians on Candler’s faculty.

“We want to demonstrate how music can make worship and music ministries more effective, creative, and faithful,” says Candler Dean Jan Love. “We’ve designed the program to give participants the chance to learn from a tremendously talented group of professors in small, intimate settings where they can gain new inspiration and new practical resources.”

The certificate program consists of two, weeklong sessions: Music and Worship as Prayer, January 9-12, 2012; and Patterns of Music and Worship, May 15-18, 2012. Participants will study music and worship from biblical times through the present, learn how to select music for worship, practice leading worship songs and hymns, and cultivate leadership and relational skills that will strengthen their abilities to plan dynamic worship that is grounded in the Gospel.

This program distinguishes itself from other music and worship learning events by its size. Unlike a large conference, participants take part in small, seminar-style classes which allow for individual attention and a more personalized learning experience.

Instructors include James Abbington, Associate Professor of Church Music and Worship; Barbara Day Miller, Associate Dean of Worship and Music; L. Edward Phillips, Associate Professor of Worship and Liturgical Theology; and Don E. Saliers, William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship, Emeritus.
