Three Candler faculty members have received recognition for excellence in mentoring and teaching. David S. Pacini won the Laney Graduate School’s 2019 Eleanor Main Award for mentoring; Ellen Ott Marshall won the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education for the Laney Graduate School; and Nichole R. Phillips won the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education for Candler School of Theology.
David Pacini, a 39-year veteran of Candler’s faculty, is professor of historical and philosophical theology and director of the Master of Theology Studies Program. Influenced by the impact of mentors on his own life, he has developed a distinct method of mentorship over the course of his teaching career, aiming to provide caring yet honest guidance that allows his students to recognize their potential and advance their careers within the current and future job market. This dedication to his students won him the Eleanor Main Award, presented by the Laney Graduate School in recognition of excellent mentorship defined by outstanding support and influence in education and career development. This year marked the inaugural year of the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education at Emory University, which honors one outstanding faculty member from each of the university’s seven graduate and professional schools. Two Candler faculty members were presented this award in its inaugural year.
Serving as both a faculty member for Candler School of Theology and the Laney Graduate School, Ellen Ott Marshall, associate professor of Christian ethics and conflict transformation, was awarded the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education for the Laney Graduate School.
