Penfield Cemetery Cleanup Day

November 11 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Help clean up the Penfield African American Cemetery! We’ll be raking, tidying, and removing fallen branches and trees to improve community access to this historic cemetery and allow mapping of grave sites. This project is a collaboration between Candler’s Pitts Theology Library, Historic Rural Churches of Georgia, Greene County African American Museum (GCAAM), and Mercer University.

Notes:

  • Parking is at the end of Cemetery Road outside the main gate
  • Please dress for the weather with outdoor clothes including long pants, work or hiking boots, and gloves
  • We suggest bringing lunch and plenty of drinking water for yourself (some snacks will be available)
  • We will have some rakes and other tools but feel free to bring yours (gas-powered leaf blowers are particularly useful!)

For more information, contact Spencer Roberts at swroberts@emory.edu or (571) 264-4019.
