Vocational Discernment & Resources

Many students come to Candler with a strong sense of vocation and a desire to serve God and the church. They also come with many questions about how they are to use their gifts, passions, and commitments. Candler creates a unique environment in which students have the time and space to think critically about their call and their hopes for themselves and the world. Through the Office of Student Life (OSL), Candler assists students as they explore diverse opportunities for congregational ministry, community leadership, and theological scholarship.

Spiritual Direction

Many Candler students choose spiritual direction as a way to learn more about God and themselves. The OSL provides resources that help students interested in pursuing this form of discernment, including a basic introduction to spiritual direction and assistance in finding a spiritual director who is a good match. Workshops

The OSL offers opportunities for vocational discernment through a variety of workshops, panel discussions and other information sessions. Students learn from chaplains, pastoral counselors and campus ministers as well as spiritual directors, nonprofit leaders, social advocates and others using their theological education in creative ministries and professions. Candler and Emory alumni are also available to mentor and encourage Candler students as they discern how they can best use their gifts and passions.

Office of United Methodist Studies

The Office of Methodist Studies assists students with information, consultation, and group opportunities for integrating theological education and the candidacy process for commissioning and ordination in The United Methodist Church.

Career Resources

Through the OSL, students have the opportunity to gain practical skills (resumes, cover letters, interviewing) in seeking and applying for jobs.
