Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Initiative in Religious Practices and Practical Theology sponsors two post-doctoral fellowships annually. Fellows are appointed for nine months, with a stipend, full benefits, and an allocation for research and travel. A reimbursement is available for moving expenses. Full details for each year’s fellowship will be announced by November 1 (see above link to Current Information and Application Materials). The deadline for applications is in mid-February, and applicants will be notified of their status during the month of March.

Candler Postdoctoral Fellowships in Practical Theology and Religious Practices are intended for persons with recently completed doctorates (Ph.D. or equivalent) in fields of religious studies other than practical theology who wish to re-tool as practical theologians or for persons with doctorates in pratical theology who wish to strengthen their research in practical theology.

This fellowship program provides both teaching and research opportunities. Fellows teach two courses in the Candler School of Theology and/or in the Department of Religion of Emory College of Arts and Sciences. Normally, one of these is a fall core course in a practical discipline co-taught with a mentor practical theologian, and the other is an advanced elective course, taught in the spring.

Fellows also participate in the spring core seminar for doctoral students in the Concentration in Religious Practices and Practical Theology, which provides an opportunity for fellows to share their own research and to engage in interdisciplinary conversation.

Fellows are able to participate in consultations of the Concentration as well as seminars throughout the Graduate Division of Religion and Emory University more broadly. In addition, the program provides significant time for research and preparing dissertations or other scholarly work for publication. The resources of the Emory University library system, and especially the Pitts Theology Library, are available.
