Fall convocation on August 24 marked the beginning of a new academic year at Candler. In her opening remarks, Dean Jan Love welcomed 179 new students in seven degree programs to the school.

Emory University President Claire Sterk and Provost Dwight A. McBride installed Love as the inaugural Mary Lee Hardin Willard Dean of Candler School of Theology, made possible by a gift from the estate of Mary Lee Hardin Willard that created a permanent endowment supporting the Candler deanship. Members of the Hardin family were on hand to witness Love’s installation.

In his convocation address entitled “Does God Take Sides?”, Dr. Douglas A. Hicks, dean of Oxford College of Emory University and William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Religion, preached from the lectionary passage Romans 12:1-8 and focused on the importance of humility.
