William Watley Visits as Whiteside Distinguished Preacher
The Rev. Dr. William D. Watley, Senior Pastor of the historic St. Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta, will visit Candler School of Theology on Tuesday, Feb. 28, and Wednesday, Feb. 29 as the 2012 Whiteside Distinguished Preacher.
“The Whiteside Distinguished Preacher series brings to Candler people who have demonstrated exceptional ability to inform, inspire, and challenge through preaching,” says Candler Dean Jan Love. “Dr. Watley’s homiletical ability is both nationally and internationally recognized, and we look forward to welcoming him to Candler.”
On Tuesday, Dr. Watley will preach as part of Candler’s Service of Word in Cannon Chapel at 11:00 a.m. The next day, he will deliver the Whiteside Distinguished Preaching Lecture at 11:00 a.m. in Candler School of Theology’s room 252. Both events are free and open to the public.
Dr. Watley has preached on six of the world’s seven continents. He has had the distinction of being the Conference Preacher for the Hampton University Minister’s Conference for two consecutive years. At the invitation of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., Dr. Watley preached to over 20,000 people at their annual International Holy Convocation.
Dr. Watley has served as a visiting professor at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New York Theological Seminary, and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is also an author, having written and edited 21 books in addition to several booklets and articles.
