Candler School of Theology at Emory University has received a gift from Dunwoody United Methodist Church to support the construction of Phase II of Candler’s building program. The church’s gift will underwrite a study area in the future space.
B. Wiley Stephens 65T, senior pastor of Dunwoody UMC, says the gift reinforces a long relationship between the church and Candler.
“With only one exception since we have been our own church, all of our senior pastors and most of our staff have been Candler graduates. The vast majority of our students going into the ministry have gone to Candler, so we see Candler as the cradle of our ministry,” Stephens says. “We see Candler as a partner in ministry and we continue to benefit from the people it produces.”
The small group study area the church is sponsoring will be located in the new Pitts Theology Library and will include seating and tables for students to collaborate on group projects. The area will be equipped with a large flat-panel monitor and other technology to facilitate group learning.
Candler continues to raise funds to support the 63,600-square-foot Phase II of its building project, which will house the Wesley Teaching Chapel and the Pitts Theology Library. Phase I of the project was completed in 2008 and includes 65,000 square feet of offices, meeting space, and classrooms. When finished, phases I and II will be connected by a glass-enclosed atrium.
The new Candler School of Theology building will enhance a “religion corridor” on Emory University’s Quadrangle that includes Cannon Chapel, Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion, and the Department of Religion in Emory College of Arts and Sciences.

This generous gift from the people of Dunwoody United Methodist Church strengthens our ability to inspire our students’ minds and empower them for ministry,” says Candler Dean Jan Love.
