Faculty Books Nominated for Awards

Books published in 2009 by Candler professors Gail R. O’Day, David L. Petersen and Thomas G. Long were nominated this year for awards from The Association of Theological Booksellers and ForeWord Reviews.

O’Day and Petersen’s collaboration, A Theological Bible Commentary, was nominated for the Theologus Best Academic Book Award, given annually by the Association of Theological Booksellers. The bookis a one-volume Bible commentary that establishes a conversation between biblical scholarship and the theological claims of the biblical texts.

Long’s newest book, Accompany Them With Singing: The Christian Funeral, was selected by ForeWord Reviews as a 2009 Book of the Year finalist in the religion category. The bookexamines the traditions, history and theology of Christian funerals with the aid of Long’s homiletic and scholarly insights. ForeWord Reviews is a review trade journal devoted to books from independent publishing houses. Long is Bandy Professor of Preaching at Candler.

O’Day is the senior associate dean of faculty and academic affairs and Almar H. Shatford Professor of Preaching and New Testament at Candler, and Petersen is Franklin Nutting Parker Professor of Old Testament. Long is Bandy Professor of Preaching.
