Worship & Music at Candler
Worship & Music at Candler
Worship is at the heart of Candler’s vision for spiritual formation. Students, faculty, staff and the greater Emory community come together on a daily basis to commune with God and one another.
While Candler is grounded in the Christian faith and shaped by the Wesleyan tradition, we worship together in many different styles and Christian traditions, from Benedictine to Baptist, Anglican to Quaker, AME to UMC. Our gathering at the table sustains us for witness to the world.
We gather for worship and prayer four days a week, with regular worship on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Evensong on Wednesdays, and Mid-Day Eucharist on Fridays.
In addition to regular weekly worship, special services present a variety of worship experiences: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Hanging of the Greens, the Annual Emory Sacred Harp Sing, and the Sending Forth service, among others.
Schedule of Services
Tuesdays-Fridays: Morning Prayer at 7:30 am
Tuesdays: Service of Word and Table at 11:05 am

The Candler Worship Teams coordinate services throughout the academic year, brining their talents and creativity to planning and leading worship. The Worship Teams are led by Rev. Barbara Day Miller, associate dean of worship and music.

Candler students are encouraged to volunteer their gifts as instrumentalists, soloists and liturgical dancers, either individually or in small ensembles, including the Candler Singers, the Candler Chorale and the Voices of Imani. The larger Emory University choirs, orchestra, and wind and percussion ensembles also are open to Candler students.
For further information, email Barbara Day Miller, associate dean of worship and music and the director of all three ensembles at Candler.
The Candler Singers
The singers and instrumentalists who make up The Candler Singers are all seminary students at Candler who are preparing for ministry in the church, the academy and the world. They come from a variety of Christian denominations and from several nations, including South Korea, Canada and the United States.
In addition to leading weekly worship at Cannon Chapel, the Candler Singers perform at a wide range of churches, regional events and denominational gatherings across the Southeast. They have been a featured choir in worship and in concerts during the quadrennial General Conferences of The United Methodist Church in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
The Candler Chorale
The Candler Chorale is open to all members of the community and is available for credit. The Chorale rehearses and sings weekly.
Voices of Imani
The Voices of Imani is a student-led gospel choir that rehearses weekly and sings in chapel several times each semester.
