Dr. Andrea C. White

Dr. Andrea White is Assistant Professor of Theology and Culture and Associated Faculty in the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She specializes in constructive Christian theology, womanist theology and postmodern religious thought with research interests especially in the doctrine of God, theology of otherness, womanist perspectives on theological anthropology, and the relationship between philosophy and theology. Her first book project, The Back of God: A Theology of Otherness in Karl Barth and Paul Ricoeur places Barth's doctrine of God as "wholly other" in conversation with Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology of the self as other and presents the possibility for divine-human relation on the basis of transcendence, rather than in spite of it. Her second book project, Black Women's Bodies and God Politics: A Womanist Theology of Personhood follows from the study of subjectivity in the first and addresses theological anthropology and narrative identity in womanist thought. Dr. White has received several research grants and fellowships, including The Louisville Institute First Book Grant for Minority Scholars and the Lilly Theological Research Faculty Fellowship from the Association of Theological Schools. She is an ordained American Baptist minister.
