    In addition to her role as Professor in the Practice of Ecclesiology and Church Leadership, the Rev. Dr. Anne Burkholder 77T 92G is the first faculty member at Candler to hold the title of associate dean of Methodist Studies, responsible for the credentialing and relocation needs of Methodist students. Burkholder also supervises the training of local pastors in The United Methodist Course of Study School at Emory, and oversees other United Methodist lifelong learning opportunities sponsored by Candler. She manages relations between Candler and the denomination’s annual regional conferences and general agencies.

    Her research interests include pastoral ethics, United Methodist polity, global Methodism, and the intersectionality of issues of race, gender, and sexuality in the history of Methodism.

    An ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, Burkholder served as the director of connectional ministries, district superintendent, urban ministries director and pastor in the Florida Conference prior to joining Candler in 2008.

    She has extensive experience as a congregational transformation consultant, social services ministries developer and disaster response coordinator. She is also a member of the American Academy of Religion.

    Burkholder is currently involved in a project that seeks to demonstrate the intersectionality of issues of race, gender, and sexuality in the history of Methodism in the U.S. In addition she and colleague Dr. Tom Elliott are working on a second volume on Methodist polity and a revision of the 2018 Quick and Easy Guide to United Methodist Polity.
