At Candler, Real Opportunity Awaits You

Candler prepares real people to make a real difference in the real world. Our distinction? We combine rigorous academics, extensive fieldwork and intentional reflection like no other seminary.

At Candler, we work to transform the world in the name of Jesus Christ by honing the talents of leaders who can shape and drive change.

If you are called to join a Christian community to learn, pray, minister and serve God and the church, Candler will prepare you to pursue your theological vocation in ministry, social service or the academy.

If you are an experienced pastor or a professional in another field such as law or medicine, Candler deepens your theological understanding and gives you practical skills to navigate the 21st century global workplace.

With a Candler education as your foundation, you can pastor an urban or rural church (or plant a church!), inspire and engage your congregation, run a home for disadvantaged families, counsel at-risk youths, work for peace at home and abroad, teach a course, become a scholar … the real opportunities are limitless.

We invite you to bring along your curiosity and creativity—and join us.

What you'll find waiting for you at Candler…

Real People

The first thing many notice about Candler—in fact, it draws students—is that people are from all walks of life. “Cookie-cutter” sameness is not a characteristic here. Here you will meet students of every stripe—reflecting and embracing their own ethnic origins, theological ideologies, denominations, political viewpoints, age and personal stories.

Real Commitment

Candler is grounded in the Christian faith and shaped by the Wesleyan tradition. One of the most colorful threads in the fabric of Candler is that we worship together in services planned by our students in many different styles and Christian traditions, from Benedictine to Baptist, Anglican to Quaker, AME to UMC. Our gathering at the Table sustains us for witness to the world.

Real Dialogue

Our students challenge each other to reach beyond what is comfortable and convenient—to engage, to listen, to respect. Spirited and open discussions across the Emory community—student to student, faculty to faculty, student to faculty—lead to a deeper understanding of why each of us believes what we believe, and give us the voice to express it.

Real Possibilities

We are committed to the church and the academy. Whether a student is called to be a minister, to a career in academia or to serve in another setting, there is a Candler degree to support that call. Students are mentored by a world-renowned faculty who love to teach. And we work diligently to make Candler financially possible for all students.

Real Change

We empower our students to lead change within their own spiritual lives, the life of the church and in the broader community. At Candler, we will encourage you to examine your own beliefs, to explore worship styles, to use your creativity and to take your faith beyond the walls of the sanctuary to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

Real Community

Candler and Emory

Candler is at the heart of Emory University, a top-20 research university, both geographically and philosophically. This central vantage point opens opportunities for cross-disciplinary discourse and study–all the more intriguing when you consider the world-famous thought leaders such as Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama and Salman Rushdie, who are Emory professors; and the fact that Candler students and faculty connect with other schools, research centers and internships in ways that aren’t typical of most seminaries.

"I have really enjoyed attending Candler—it is a diverse school, not only ethnically and in age, but also with people from a vast array of backgrounds. Being in this community, and in the Atlanta community, that has such a rich history of people in ministry living out the gospel, has been a transformative experience for me."
