Lutheran Church of the Messiah

Lutheran Church of the Messiah

To form disciples and serve the church's neighbors.

The church is an intergenerational community committed to growing together in God's grace and reaching out in love to neighbors. The church is in the heart of Decatur and is connected to local ministries like Hagar's House, a homeless shelter for women and children, and Meals on Wheels, which serves the elderly.

Unique Opportunities in Ministry

The church hosts Days for Girls, a ministry of sewing for women in the developing world who would miss school and work without the hygiene products the church supplies. The church also has community outreach opportunities since it is situated in the heart of a walkable neighborhood and has immense opportunity to connect with people's everyday lives. Lastly, the church has a catechumenal ministry that is in the preliminary stages of offering a ministry that joins newcomers with long standing members in an attempt to deepen faith.

Meeting the Five Areas of Ministry

Administration: Interns at Messiah are welcome to participate as much as they wish in monthly council meetings, written and digital communications, and ongoing planning for worship, Christian formation, service and outreach.

Liturgy (Worship and Preaching): Interns at Messiah will have the opportunity to serve as assistants in worship-- helping to lead the liturgy and assist with communion, as well as to serve as lector. Interns have traditionally preached once a month. That's not a firm expectation, but they are encouraged to make the most of the opportunity to practice their skills in a safe and forgiving environment, with the opportunity to receive constructive feedback from the supervisor.

Mission and Outreach: There are many opportunities for mission and outreach in our neighborhood and in the City of Decatur. The church is actively engaged with Days for Girls, Meals on Wheels and Hagar's House. The church is developing a plan to host three or four big events each year to help the church better connect with the neighborhood. The church is also working on improving hospitality as a church, so that when newcomers join, everyone is prepared to welcome them.

Pastoral Calling and Congregational Care: Interns will have the opportunity to work with the pastor in making home visits. Messiah has a care ministry which assists in offering care to people experiencing transition in the congregation, and the interns are most welcome to participate in this ministry.

Teaching: For adults there is a weekly Bible study and two weekly discipleship groups. For the children, there is a weekly Sunday school for children ages 9 and under. Interns can be involved in these groups.
