Northside Hospital Gwinnett

Northside Hospital Gwinnett is an inpatient, outpatient and level-II trauma care hospital in Lawrenceville, Georgia, located 30 miles north of Emory’s campus in Gwinnett County.

Site Work

Fall site hours are generally Wednesdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Flexible hours in consideration of the student's schedule must be arranged in consultation with the site supervisor. More flexibility in hours may be available in the Spring semester, but will need to be arranged in consultation with the site supervisor.

Site work will be in person. Covid vaccine required.

Students assist the professional chaplaincy staff by providing pastoral care to patients and families of patients at the hospital’s Lawrenceville, Duluth and Glancy campuses. Interested students may have the opportunity to continue language proficiency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Bosnian, and Mandarin.

Pastoral Care Class

Students who enroll in Northside Hospital Gwinnett will also enroll in Intro to Pastoral Care PC501CE 2 in the fall semester (Thursday, 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.) taught by Dr. Emmanuel Lartey.

Faculty Academic Advisor

Dr. John Snarey will serve as the academic advisor for Northside Hospital Gwinnett students.

About the Site

With roots that go back over 60 years, Northside Hospital Gwinnett now includes two hospitals plus additional supporting medical facilities, with more than 4,100 employees and 800 affiliated physicians. Gwinnett Medical Center is a not-for-profit healthcare network providing a wide array of high-quality services and facilities to diverse populations in Gwinnett and the surrounding area. Chaplaincy is well integrated into the life of the hospital. The Northside Hospital Gwinnett System Chaplaincy Department consists of four staff chaplains, four full-time clinical pastoral education residents, and shorter-term clinical pastoral education students. In the stressful modern health care environment, a large part of the Chaplaincy Department's role is also staff support.

Additional Requirements & Accessibility

A Covid vaccination is required for all students working at this site. Students who select this clinical setting should bring the results of their tuberculosis test to the August site orientation. Students will not be allowed to begin site work until they have received a T.B. skin test, and the test result has been given to the site supervisor. In addition, students at this site will be required to get a flu shot in the fall. (Flu shots will be available on site for free in October).

Students should also review the volunteer orientation PowerPoint before the August site orientation (Note: Students who enroll at this site will receive more information about the PowerPoint after enrollment.) The group will collectively review the training material during the orientation on-site visit, and students will be required to demonstrate familiarity with the material.

Students who are immune-suppressed should speak to their personal physician before selecting this site.

Site Supervisors

The Rev. Orlando Scott is an ordained Christian Church Disciples of Christ minister, and Staff Chaplain at Northside Hospital Gwinnett Duluth. Currently, Orlando and a faithful few launched the AMPLIFY Christian Church (DOC) in Snellville, GA, and is the incoming trustee board chair for the National Benevolent Association; the health and human services ministry for the Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
