Oral History Project

Composing A Life—Women Changing the Church and Society

The Oral History Project is an ambitious effort to gather women's stories through presentations and interviews for the sake of present and future generations. The Oral History Project seeks to gather the stories through a series of events, including public presentations and interviews, small group interviews in classes and other contexts, and quiet interview settings. Then selections, teaching resources, and reflective essays are made availalbe through web communication, while the full collection is available in Pitts Theology Library archives at Emory University.

Having completed forty-two sets of interviews, we have seen the power of women's stories to edify people who participate in the original events, and then to edify others who view videotapes, transcripts, and collected materials. The value is access to the oral histories through Pitts archives for future generations, including: the presentations and interviews (in DVD and transcript forms); biographical material; photographs; collected publications and papers; and historical-contextual materials. Our dream in this ongoing project is to offer women's wisdom to communities in this historical moment and in perpetuity.
