Leadership Candler

Emory University’s Candler School of Theology is pleased to announce a new scholarship event, Leadership Candler, to be held February 28 - March 2, 2010. Successful applicants will be invited to experience Candler firsthand with all expenses paid. This event will help prospective students discern their vocation more clearly and learn how Candler can deepen, challenge, and further inspire their calling to serve God.

About Leadership Candler

Candler School of Theology is grounded in Christian faith and shaped by the Wesleyan tradition of evangelical piety, ecumenical openness, and social concern. We are known for our remarkable faculty and innovative curriculum. With the unique resources of a top-ranked research university and situated within a faithful Christian community, Candler offers students the opportunity to grow into faithful leaders for Christian ministry and service.

Leadership Candler will bring together a distinguished group of prospective Master of Divinity students from across the country and the world who are active leaders within churches, on campuses, and across communities. We seek those who are ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime in theological education.

The weekend will include visits to classes, conversations with Candler's superb faculty, and a campus tour, including time at Pitts Theology Library, North America's premier theological library. Leadership Candler will also include interaction with current students and staff, group discussions, interviews with scholarship committees, and opportunities to spend time with future classmates.

Leadership Candler candidates must demonstrate confident and unselfish character combined with deep concern for others; intellectual achievement; impressive communication skills; significant leadership and creativity in school, church, or community; and a clear potential for enriching the lives of their contemporaries at Candler School of Theology.

Candler's Unique MDiv Curriculum

Leadership possibilities are abundant with an MDiv from Candler School of Theology. Whether considering ordination and serving a congregation, counseling, chaplaincy, campus ministry, youth ministry, missions, not-for-profit work, Christian education, teaching, or many other vocations, those engaged in Candler's MDiv program gain a solid foundation of coursework and at least two years of integrated practical experience.

During three years (86 credit hours) at Candler, students enroll in foundational courses from the core curriculum. During the first two years at Candler, students engage in Contextual Education, our field education program designed to provide experience in ministry both within and beyond the local church.

Our innovative curriculum ensures that course work prepares and challenges candidates for ministry and service. Students work intensely with a ministry practitioner and have many opportunities to engage coursework and the experiences of ministry settings in a way that truly inspires and empowers.

In addition to the required common courses, the MDiv allows students to focus on a particular area of interest. After the first year of study, students choose an area of concentration, consisting of four to five classes in one of the following areas:

  • Formation and Witness
  • Leadership in Church and Community
  • Religion, Health, and Science
  • Religion and Race
  • Scripture and Interpretation
  • Society and Personality
  • Theology and the Arts
  • Theology and Ethics
  • Traditions of the Church
  • Women and Religion

Candler’s MDiv offers it all—core curriculum, practical experience, an area of concentration, and many electives (including electives to fulfill ordination requirements). A wide variety of certificate programs is also offered.

Candler students can also take advantage of the larger offerings at Emory University. Joint degree programs are available through the Emory School of Law (MDiv/JD) and the Goizueta School of Business (MDiv/MBA). The master of divinity degree at Candler School of Theology prepares persons both academically and practically for a life of servant leadership.
