The Candler School of Theology and Emory University invites applications and nominations for a full-time junior-level tenure track position in pastoral care and counseling. Candler has a strong tradition of preparing persons for ministry and for high-quality graduate education in pastoral theology and religious practices. We seek a colleague who has the commitment and capacity to think theologically and systemically, about the field of pastoral care and counseling within the life of the church, and demonstrated sensitivity to the religious, social, and cultural dimensions of pastoral care and counseling. The candidate will also have the ability to teach effectively in an ecumenical context and be committed to the formation of students for ministry. Candidates are expected to show evidence of a firm commitment to scholarly research and publication in pastoral care and counseling, pastoral theology, psychology of religion, or religion and the human sciences. An earned doctorate (PhD or ThD) is required.
The appointee will teach primarily in the master of divinity program and will be responsible for an introductory course in pastoral care taught on a regular basis. Other teaching responsibilities could include electives in pastoral care and counseling, family systems, marriage and family therapy, occasional courses in religion and personality theory, psychology of religion, or religion and the human sciences. Participation in Candler’s program of contextual education is also expected. The appointee will share teaching responsibilities with other Atlanta Theological Association faculty in the ThD program in pastoral counseling. Either membership in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors or other demonstration of competence in counseling theory and practice is expected. Appointees may have opportunities to teach at the PhD level with approval of the Graduate Division of Religion faculty of Emory University.

The successful candidate may be a scholar in any discipline, including but not limited to history, theology, sociology of religion, biblical studies, ethics, and all areas of practical theology. Candler has a strong tradition in the study of African American religion and spirituality, and we seek a colleague who has the commitment and capacity to add to our current strengths in African American Christianity and contribute to the formation of persons for the ministry. Candidates are expected to show evidence of a firm commitment to scholarly research and publication in their discipline. An earned doctorate (PhD or ThD) is required. Rank is open and may be made at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor depending on qualifications.
